Art Reflection for Advent: Week 2

(Sorry this post is a day late!)

As I mentioned last week, my church is going through the hymn Go Tell it On the Mountain. I wanted to share the digital art I created for the series and a short reflection:
Go_Tell_it_Mountain_Week1Yesterday, I watched two of my siblings perform in their high school Christmas program. It wasn’t your traditional Mary-shepherds-creepy wise men performance. Using a mixed media of video, dance, and music, they told the story of a WWI Christmas. Exactly 100 years ago–1914.

German and English troops paused their shooting for a game of football and gift exchanging during Christmas day.

I’m reading over these lines from the first stanza again and this image from the play sticks in my head–the stage light spotlighting No Man’s Land as costumed teens set down fake guns and pick up Christmas trees. A heavenly light shining upon a holy moment of peace between divided enemies.

I know today’s world can be dark and hard. But I wonder if we could expand that stage light beyond No Man’s Land. Maybe that heavenly light would reveal other moments of peace and hope where enemies have, even if only for a minute, become united.

(here’s the entire first stanza, if you want it:

While shepherds kept their watching
Over silent flocks by night,
Behold throughout the heavens,
There shone a holy light:
Go, Tell It On The Mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere;
Go, Tell It On The Mountain
That Jesus Christ is born. )
